Johnny Cashew FINANCING REFORESTATION

Johnny Cashew is dedicated to revolutionizing the cashew industry by ensuring all cashews are processed in their country of origin, thus avoiding unnecessary transportation around the globe. Founded with a mission to stop the "detour-cashew," Johnny Cashew works directly with more than 1,000 Fairtrade-certified farmers in Tanzania. They work together with “Mama Cashew”, a local processor, which has created secure income for over 600 local workers, primarily women, thanks to their cooperation with Johnny Cashew. By localizing the peeling process, they reduce carbon emissions significantly and support local economies.

Despite their efforts to reduce emissions through local processing, some emissions remain unavoidable. Johnny Cashew sought a robust solution to address these residual emissions and further their climate action goals.

FORLIANCE partnered with Johnny Cashew to manage their unavoidable emissions through the Uchindile & Mapanda Reforestation Project. This initiative focuses on carbon sequestration through reforestation and sustainable land management in Tanzania. The project rebuilds pine and eucalyptus forests in the Southern Highlands, transforming degraded grassland into forests with higher carbon sequestration capacity. Sustainable harvesting practices maintain forest regeneration, supporting four villages with over 1,000 households and providing employment for more than 340 people.

Johnny Cashew’s climate strategy includes reducing emissions through local processing and investing in carbon sequestration projects. By partnering with FORLIANCE, they are able to manage their residual emissions and support sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities. The project also improves social conditions by constructing wells, improving school and hospital infrastructure, and supporting women's entrepreneurship through training and seedling distribution.
