The project objective comprises the teak reforestation and sustainable management of 5,000 hectares in the Darién Region. The area selected for the plantation is considered the largest and wildest remaining patch of rainforest in Panama. Due to illegal logging and ongoing deforestation, the biodiversity hotspot remains degraded, making it uninhabitable for flora and fauna. Introduced reforestation activities make the land more hospitable to wildlife, providing food and shelter and improving connectivity with other forested areas.
Implemented forest management practices offer great potential for improving soil quality and open up new opportunities for local agricultural activities. In addition, plantation management will be carried out on a rotational basis, providing long-term and stable jobs for local community members. Empowering residents through fair wages, employment and regular training sessions improves living standards in the project area vicinity. The project seeks to demonstrate sustainable economic growth and urgent action on climate change mitigation.
