Nestled in the remote Vichada Department of the Orinoco River basin, the Vichada Climate Reforestation Project began as a timber production initiative and has evolved into a pioneering conservation effort. Expanding across 73,835 hectares, the project not only enhances carbon sequestration and biodiversity protection but also creates sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
FORLIANCE has been instrumental in achieving Gold Standard and FSC group certification, making this the first afforestation and reforestation project worldwide to be Gold Standard certified. By streamlining the certification process, FORLIANCE reduced costs and efforts for project partners.
Through reforestation, preserving native vegetation, and implementing sustainable land management strategies, the project actively mitigates greenhouse gases and supports Colombia’s development goals.
What makes this project stand out:
- Preserving Colombia's natural legacy in Vichada
- From timber to conservation: Reviving 73,835 hectares into natural sanctuaries
- Resilient landscape initiative: Gold Standard certified pioneer in carbon storage
- Wilderness employment program: Pioneering opportunities in remote territories
