The local community has developed two separate reforestation projects in the regions of Sodo and Humbo (approximately 300 km south of Addis Ababa) in collaboration with the NGO World Vision. While these are distinct initiatives, they are often referred to collectively as the Sodo/Humbo project due to their shared goals and integrated approach to ecosystem restoration and community empowerment. Both projects place a strong emphasis on active participation and self-determination of the local population.
Residents of the communities around Mount Damota play a crucial role in the design and direct implementation of these efforts. The primary goal is to protect the severely degraded forests on the mountain’s slopes and prevent further deforestation. By utilizing the farmer-managed natural regeneration (FMNR) method, the projects improve the landscape, providing food and shelter for wildlife, and creating connectivity to other forested areas. Additionally, both reforestation and afforestation efforts contribute to long-term ecosystem restoration in the region.
Together, the Sodo and Humbo projects serve as a powerful example of community-led reforestation, driving sustainable income opportunities and capacity building for local residents.
What makes this project stand out:
- Empowering Ethiopia: FMNR revolutionizing soil management for vibrant communities
- Community wells initiative: Providing vital water access
- Safeguarding 25 endangered species and ecosystem diversity
- Socioeconomic empowerment and gender equality: Creating 2000 jobs for inclusive growth
