Feasibility study for organic cocoa plantation, Dominican Republic

About this project

The feasibility study aimed at exploring chances, impacts and risks of an investment in an organic cocoa plantation in the Dominican Republic. Core aspects included due diligence, analysis of supply and demand, competitor situation and market potential; analysis of legal frameworks and land options, elaboration of financial requirements (considering land purchase, construction of buildings, machinery, staff, certifications) and a risk analysis. The envisioned plantation is supposed to serve as a lighthouse project regarding its sustainable management practices, technology transfer and added values such as Payment for Ecosystem Services. Different scenarios like the purchase of suitable private land, a leasing system and an out grower scheme were considered. The study was co-funded by DEG, Germany. The project was conducted by desk review, interviews with local and international experts, collaboration with local service providers and field trips evaluating suitable land options.
