FORLIANCE is thrilled to spotlight a significant milestone in our conservation efforts: the development of a groundbreaking mangrove methodology in collaboration with Gold Standard. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the restoration and sustainable management of critical mangrove ecosystems around the globe.
At its core, a methodology embodies a systematic framework, encompassing a series of processes and criteria designed to guide specific project activities. This includes, but is not limited to, defining project boundaries, proving the additional benefits of the project (additionality), setting the baseline scenario, quantifying net greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions, and outlining monitoring procedures. It’s the blueprint that ensures projects are impactful, verifiable, and aligned with global best practices.
Mangroves are not just trees; they are vital ecosystems that provide a multitude of ecological services, from carbon sequestration to protecting coastlines from erosion. Despite their significance, mangroves are among the most threatened habitats on our planet. Recognizing this, and the absence of a mangrove-specific methodology within Gold Standard’s afforestation/reforestation (A/R) frameworks, we felt compelled to address this gap. The collaboration aimed to tailor a methodology that encapsulates the unique aspects of mangrove ecosystems, ensuring their restoration and conservation are conducted with the efficiency and environmental integrity.
FORLIANCE has been at the forefront of this initiative, spearheading the development of the sustainable mangrove methodology. Our journey has been marked by a rigorous process aimed at securing methodology approval from Gold Standard. This endeavor not only highlights our expertise and commitment to environmental excellence but also underscores our role as innovators in the field of sustainable land use and climate action.
With the forthcoming approval of this methodology, we are set to revolutionize the way mangrove restoration projects are designed, implemented, and certified. This framework will not only streamline the certification process for upcoming projects but also pave the way for the development of additional modules tailored to the evolving needs of the voluntary carbon market.
Currently, the methodology is in a critical phase of public consultation, open until the 5th of April. This stage invites feedback from various stakeholders, ensuring the methodology is robust, inclusive, and reflective of diverse perspectives. Following this, Gold Standard will undertake a second technical review, moving us closer to final approval and the official launch of the methodology.
We invite you to learn more about this pioneering methodology and join us in our mission to protect and restore mangrove ecosystems. Together, we can make a tangible difference in the fight against climate change and the preservation of biodiversity.
