Vichada Regenera is FORLIANCE’s latest large-scale Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) initiative—and a significant expansion of our long-standing engagement in Colombia’s Orinoquía region. Building on the foundation of the Vichada Climate Reforestation Project, one of the earliest ARR activities registered under Gold Standard, this new phase reflects a modern, science-based approach to restoring degraded land while generating credible, long-term carbon removals.
Designed from the outset with transparency, measurable impact, and technical excellence in mind, Vichada Regenera brings together climate action, biodiversity recovery, and community empowerment on a landscape scale.
Expanding a Proven Foundation
Located in the Orinoquía region, the project will restore approximately 10,000 hectares of degraded land through a carefully designed mix of native species and transitional eucalyptus. This combination supports early growth and long-term ecosystem resilience.
The restoration strategy is expected to:
- deliver significant long-term carbon removals,
- improve soil health and water availability,
- enhance biodiversity across the landscape, and
- regenerate vital ecological functions.
Beyond environmental outcomes, Vichada Regenera will create more than 700 jobs, with at least 40% for women, providing stable employment opportunities in rural communities where alternatives are limited. The project contributes to multiple UN SDGs, including climate action, decent work, gender equality, and biodiversity conservation.
Integrity at the Core of Project Design
As expectations for transparency and scientific rigor rise across the voluntary carbon market, Vichada Regenera has been shaped to meet emerging global definitions of high-quality carbon removals.
Key design principles include:
- Permanence: Use of native species, active risk-mitigation strategies, and exploration of long-term conservation models such as private protected areas.
- Additionality: Restoration at this scale would not be financially viable without carbon finance—ensuring clear additional climate impact.
- Beyond-carbon value: Biodiversity monitoring supported by trail cameras, structured field surveys, and ecosystem assessments ensures measurable, verifiable impact beyond carbon alone.
The project aligns with the expectations of rating agencies and global frameworks that define next-generation carbon removal quality.
Local Collaboration for Long-Term Impact
FORLIANCE’s development approach is rooted in partnership. Together with local partner Inverbosques and surrounding communities, Vichada Regenera strengthens regional expertise and creates long-term social and ecological value.
The project prioritises:
- local nursery management and capacity-building,
- community involvement in planting, monitoring, and forest maintenance,
- improved infrastructure and skills development,
- biodiversity protection on and around project sites.
By creating opportunities within local communities, the project helps reduce rural emigration and supports long-term landscape stewardship.
