The Vichada Climate Reforestation Project, located in Colombia's remote Orinoco River Basin, demonstrates how high-quality carbon credits and meaningful community development reinforce each other. Nowhere is this more visible than at Institución Educativa La Esmeralda, a rural boarding school that has become an example of what nature-based climate solutions can deliver for both people and planet.
La Esmeralda, a community initiative that began officially on August 24, 2023, is a multi-disciplinary boarding school that nurtures future leaders through robust academic curriculums, competitive sports programs, and forward-thinking agricultural education. By addressing the school's structural needs, the project aims to bridge the digital divide, foster environmental stewardship, and support the development of the next generation.
This dual focus on climate and community is made possible through the project’s implementation structure. At FORLIANCE, we understand that meaningful environmental stewardship must be paired with genuine human development. Together with InverBosques, its on-site project operator, we ensure that investments in the project's environmental assets are efficiently translated into local infrastructure, creating a tangible, lasting social footprint alongside measurable environmental outcomes.
One of the project's primary goals is to provide rural students in Vichada with access to the same technological opportunities found in major urban centers through digital infrastructure development.
This journey toward digital transformation began on June 12, 2024, when the on-site team installed a Starlink satellite internet system, bringing reliable high-speed connectivity to the campus for the first time. The network was further expanded in February 2025 with a campus-wide signal repeater, ensuring that every classroom could benefit from stable access.
Connecting students to global knowledge with high-speed internet
Beyond technology, the initiative also targets critical infrastructure to ensure a safe, healthy, and self-sufficient learning environment. This began with fundamental operational support, including a fuel donation on August 24, 2023, and quickly progressed to essential health infrastructure. On July 27, 2024, a state-of-the-art potable water treatment plant was constructed on-site, later complemented on March 17, 2025, by the delivery of five commercial water dispensers distributed throughout the campus.
When severe weather struck on August 9, 2025, damaging the school’s electrical system, the on-site operator provided immediate technical support and a new generator control board to restore power. Most recently, on April 1, 2026, the project achieved a massive milestone in corporate-sponsored sustainability by delivering the Soluna solar farm, giving the school its own source of clean, renewable energy alongside modernized classroom acrylic boards.
Ensuring access to safe, treated drinking water for every child.
The impact of this corporate-backed initiative stretches far beyond standard academics. La Esmeralda stands out for its agricultural education program, which teaches students the practical value of sustainable farming and food security, a key complement to the reforestation and ecosystem restoration work taking place across the wider Vichada Climate Reforestation Project area.
To support this vision, specialized irrigation hoses were delivered on January 24, 2025, to optimize the school's vegetable garden. This program expanded into the wider community throughout June and July 2025, when the project supported land preparation and seed delivery for two community garden plots, directly addressing local nutritional needs.
Supporting hands-on agricultural education for future farmers
The project operates on the principle that fueling the passion, creativity, and engagement of the student body is essential to reducing dropout rates and fostering community resilience. To support this, the initiative organized two major distributions of educational materials: 110 school supply kits on March 8, 2025, and another 125 kits on March 5, 2026.
Strengthening academic development for the school
The initiative also actively celebrates the school's athletic and artistic talent. On July 7, 2025, the project sponsored travel and logistics for the school's team, "El Tesoro de la Esmeralda," to represent the institution at a regional departmental event. This recognition continued during the Interschool Games on October 31, 2025, with the donation of 30 medals and 3 trophies, followed by art exhibition supplies and a bicycle raffle on November 27, 2025, to honor student creativity and achievement.
Empowering bright minds with the academic tools they need to succeed
Every milestone achieved at Institución Educativa La Esmeralda is a testament to what happens when corporate sustainability contributions align with genuine human development.
When organizations choose to support certified environmental projects like the Vichada Climate Reforestation Project, they participate in a broader ecosystem that actively funds clean energy, digital access, clean water, and long-term rural development outcomes.
For corporate partners looking to enhance their ESG strategy with transparent, verifiable co-benefits, this project demonstrates how targeted regional investments foster both ecological resilience and social equity through carbon finance.
